After seeing the Lamb who is Worthy, and giving praise to Him, this is what comes next: “The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.” (5:14) “Amen” is such a good word – strong, solid. It means “yes.” God says yes to us. We respond to his yes by saying yes, amen. Peterson tells us that a second generation of Christians tried for a time to translate the Hebrew “amen” into Greek. But the word aleuthinos lacked affirmative robustness; literally it means “that which is not false,” so they gave up and returned to “Amen.” “Amen” – say it again, “Amen!” One of my heroes, E. Stanley Jones, once wrote a book entitled, “The Divine Yes.” He wrote about the positive nature of God, of the Gospel, of all aspects of the Christian faith, and he said he wanted his life to be a “Yes” back to God, in response to God’s yes to us – an Amen. That’s what I want, and I suspect it’s what you want to. So, go for it! Be an Amen. It sure beats being an “aleuthinos”! any time, doesn't it? Share |
