Who is Worthy

Then I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals.  And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?”  But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside.  Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep!  See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David has triumphed.  He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”  Then I saw a Lamb… “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.”  (Rev. 5).

Oh my!  These heavenly images are breathtaking!  And they convey such deep truth.  Here’s the truth to the question:  “Who is worthy?”  No one!  No one, except the Lamb!  “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”   When we get that right – when I get that right, i.e. that I’m not worthy, no one is worthy, but only the Lamb of God is, then I get it all right!  He is God and I’m not.  I can’t save myself – from the deepest things that really, really matter.  Oh, I might fix this problem or that one, but – my past?  Nothing I can do about it – only the Lamb can.  My eternal destination?  Only the Lamb who was slain.  I admit that I don’t fully understand Atonement or the atoning work of Jesus, but, oh my, I am forever grateful for it!

So, whenever you get a little full of yourself, remember – there is only One who is worthy!
