Unfaithfulness to God is a serious thing. Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. (James 4:4)

James was dealing with people who “wanted it both ways:” they wanted to play fast and loose with the world and also come to God whenever they needed Him. James is saying, “It doesn’t work that way!” You’re either going one direction or the other. As a friend of mine says, “If you’re wanting to go to Atlanta, and your car is driving south on I-75, no matter how many times you think about Atlanta, you’re never going to get there – unless and until you turn your car around and head north – in the direction of Atlanta. Same is true with God – we’re either running toward God or away from God; we can’t have it both ways. Which way are you heading right now?
