Whoever is in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the one who “has it all” should take pride in his/her low position, because they will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the “high and mighty” will fade away even while going about their daily routine. (James 1:9–11)
James is saying that we can create the illusion of being impervious to the realities of life, especially if we have the means (financial and power). We can fool ourselves into thinking we are – well, immortal. Which is why Ash Wednesday is such an important day in the Christian calendar – it reminds us of our human condition, that we will all “fade away” someday, and therefore our need of God.
“Whoever is in humble circumstances” has all the advantages that come with humility, of realizing our dependency on God – for all things, for life itself. There is no illusion, only gratitude for the time we have.
So, the next time you see your wealthy and powerful neighbor strutting around, don’t envy; just thank God for your low estate and be grateful for everything you have!
